United Nations Removes Sanctions on Syria's Leader Ahead of White House Visit

Security Council representatives gave the green light to a United States-backed measure ending penalties on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa before his Washington trip next week.

He became interim leader subsequent to commanding a rebel offensive that ousted Bashar al-Assad in the final month of 2024, ending thirteen long years of domestic strife.

The US representative to the UN Mike Waltz said the UN had sent "a strong political signal" that acknowledged Syria entered "a fresh chapter" since Assad was deposed.

Previously, he faced UN sanctions while commanding the Muslim faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), previously associated with the extremist organization. The US removed the organization from the catalog of foreign terror groups during July.

More Penalties Removed

Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.

The Syrian diplomatic chief applauded the lifting of these restrictions, posting on social media: "The nation shows its gratitude toward America and allied countries for assisting the country and its population."

Imminent Washington Talks

Sharaa's White House visit this coming Monday occurs subsequent to American leader Donald Trump stated the Middle Eastern president demonstrated "substantial headway" in establishing peace to the previously divided state.

The two leaders convened for the first time in May, when Trump visited Riyadh during a visit to the Middle East.

Subsequent to that discussion, Trump portrayed the Syrian as a "strong individual" with a "very strong past".

His Islamist group HTS operated as the terrorist network's partner inside the country before he cut connections in 2016.

Prior United States Journey

This week's diplomatic engagement will not be the president's debut journey to America in the current year. During September, he made history as the first Syrian leader to address the global assembly at UN headquarters for nearly six decades.

During his address, he stated the country had been "reclaiming its rightful place among the nations of the world" and demonstrated unity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
