Nintendo alongside Illumination released the initial complete preview for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie on Wednesday. This occurred during a special Nintendo Direct that highlighted the forthcoming animated feature.
The sequel to the 2023 blockbuster The Super Mario Bros. Movie, this new installment will transport Mario to the distant reaches of the universe. In his journey, he meets a fresh princess character and a powerful new opponent in Bowser Jr., the heir to Bowser's throne.
In the vein of the Wii-era games that provide its foundation, Mario will depart from the cozy environment of the Mushroom Kingdom to travel across the galaxy. Throughout his extensive trek, he will meet again some recognizable characters, including the Luma, a fan favorite from the first movie.
Yet it looks like Mario and his sibling Luigi will confront a new threat in the form of Bowser's irate young son, who apparently wields metal-based powers. Interestingly, the trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is not only concentrated on visuals from the Galaxy games; it also features references to other beloved games like Super Mario Odyssey and Bowser's Fury.
The movie will welcome back of the initial voice actors, featuring Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.
Fresh faces in the lineup for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie are Brie Larson, who will bring to life Rosalina, and Benny Safdie, set to represent Bowser Jr. This was confirmed by the CEO of Illumination, Chris Meledandri.
Mario's latest cinematic adventure is set to release close to the four-decade milestone of the first Super Mario Bros. title. Beyond the film, 2026 looks set to be a important time for Mario and his companions.
Nintendo confirmed a trio of new releases officially announced for 2026, featuring Mario Tennis Fever, a version for Switch 2 of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and a new Yoshi platformer titled Yoshi and the Mysterious Book.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is scheduled to hit theaters on April 3, 2026.
