Thomas Tuchel voiced his sadness that the England team did not get stronger backing from the Wembley fans during their decisive triumph over Wales on Thursday night.
Tuchel was satisfied to see his side maintain their good form, with goals from Rogers, Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the first 20 minutes deciding the match. Yet, he was unhappy with the energy at the iconic venue.
“With one and a half training days to prepare against a well-trained team and we did very well,” Tuchel remarked. “It could have been five goals ahead at the break. We couldn’t score the additional goals. The stadium was silent. There was no support back from the crowd. We did everything to win.”
“What more can you give in the first quarter? We prevented them get away. If you hear just the Welsh supporters for 30 minutes, it’s sad because the team earned more support today.”
“I stand by my words. We cannot do more than being 3-0 in a derby. I would have wished for a greater backing in periods where it becomes tough.”
“In the second half, to support us, there was excessive backing for the opposition. It might have aided us to refocus, but it is what it is and so be it.”
Apart from risking a fight with fans, the manager also raised eyebrows by omitting Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden from his squad. But the choice was backed up by Rogers excelling in the attacking midfield role and scoring his maiden goal for his country.
“He plays his game,” Tuchel noted. “He is a No 10 and he is vying for his position.”
The Wales manager expressed hope that Wales, who face Belgium in a key qualifying match on next week, take lessons from their poor first-half display.
“This is why I scheduled this game,” the manager commented. “I need to see our current level. Where do we want to go? What is our identity? Today fills me with motivation.”
Ollie Watkins was substituted at half-time after hitting a goalpost and may miss out when England play their next opponents in the Latvian capital in a World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday.
