José Mourinho has expressed keen in taking over as the new manager of Benfica, after the departure of Bruno Lage.
Lage was dismissed after the Portuguese club suffered a surprising 3-2 defeat to Qarabağ in the UEFA Champions League.
Club chairman Rui Costa stated that the club intends to appoint a replacement coach by the weekend, though he declined to speculate on individual candidates.
Sources suggest that Mourinho is willing to a return to Portugal's soccer, over two decades after he departed for Chelsea FC.
José Mourinho started his managerial career with SL Benfica in 2000, though his stay was brief, lasting only 10 matches.
He later achieved fame with Porto, leading them to six trophies, such as the Champions League in 2004.
Since then, he has coached elite clubs across the continent, including Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham, Roma, and Fenerbahçe.
If appointed, he would face his former team Chelsea in the UCL on 30 September.
The team is also scheduled to meet Newcastle and Real Madrid in the group stage.
Currently, Benfica sits 6th in the Primeira Liga, five points behind leaders Porto.
This move to change the manager aligns with forthcoming club elections on 25 October.
Joao Noronha Lopes, the frontrunner, has reportedly expressed preference in Ruben Amorim of Man United.
The president emphasized that the decision was taken solely for football purposes and not for political gains.
"I'm not here to protect any roles," Costa stated. "The aim is to ensure the best outcome for Benfica."
