Girls & Boys Cinema Critique: Powerful Trans Romance Creates Fireworks in Striking First Feature

This Dublin-set young adult love story starts authentically, taking place on Halloween in Dublin where Trinity College students are partying in an deserted location.

Rugby player Jason (a newcomer actor) is connecting with hopeful filmmaker the other lead (a fresh talent); their exchange is relaxed and intense, light-hearted and meaningful, reflecting genuine interaction.

“I’m playing a role portraying an arrogant jock,” says the character.

We’ve just watched him facing teasing in the changing facility for sporting his pierced ears. Viewers can virtually see his heart thumping in his chest while speaking with the love interest, identifying as transgender.

An Evening Through the Streets

The pair spend the night drifting through the Dublin streets; they reach out to a local contact to get pyrotechnics not drugs and record one another with a Super 8 camera.

No one bothers them. The feature is soft and charming up to a unexpected twist – a development that will require a stiff test of your ability to embrace the fictional, that almost verges on clumsy.

Presence and Authenticity Elevate the Story

However the appeal and lovely naturalism of roles from fresh faces the lead actor and Hannon carries it off. Lunnon-Collery is notably outstanding as Jason, all warmth and charm on the outside.

And fair play to the script by debut filmmaker Donncha Gilmore, which gets more interesting as the story progresses, bringing in concepts about remorse and the unreliability of memory.

Self-Image and Remorse

The protagonist experiences a shock to his view of himself: his certainty in himself as the good guy, a ally to the needy. He feels a surge of embarrassment over a situation from his past, events that he has altered in his recollection to soften the impact.

A notable initial feature.
