Steam Next Fest is in full swing, and players have found a variety of entertaining independent titles. However, one is particularly notable for its unconventional concept. Called Unko Technica, this old-school styled side-scrolling game includes a hero that is literally a piece of poop striving to travel to a toilet. For those curious, "Unko" means "poop."
How you interact is simple: just use a single jump button. Throughout 150 levels, encounter boss fights and visit a market to buy customizations for your dung hero.
Plan your jumps carefully, as a wrong move requires restarting the level. Bounce off bubbles to propel yourself higher, traverse disappearing ledges, and interact with buttons to reveal secret routes. Earn currency and use them on more difficult stages as things intensifies.
In terms of design, the experience features eye-catching stages and a killer background music. Its minimalist art of shifting basic polygons may remind gamers of beloved games like Earthbound.
Although tough to think of similar titles where you play as a coiled turd, interactive entertainment have long incorporated fecal matter. For instance, in Death Stranding, players create throwables from character droppings. Games like Palworld and Ark: Survival Evolved use dung as plant food. And of course, this theme appears extensively in the adventure The Stick of Truth.
Putting aside its silly idea, Unko Technica has already garnered significant awards, such as being named best at Bandai Namco's game competition in 2023. The demo is ready now on Steam, with the complete version planned to arrive on Steam in the fall.
