In what was described as “a national calamity,” prosecutors laid out a disturbing narrative of the alleged killing of rightwing figure Charlie Kirk.
Per the district attorney’s office, Tyler Robinson turned into consumed by hatred for Kirk and his ideology. Officials claim Robinson premeditated the murder in just over a week after learning Kirk would be appearing at Utah Valley University.
The state assert Robinson sent his roommate texts confessing to the crime. In a particular exchange, Robinson reportedly wrote, “I seized the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it.”
“Erase this exchange,” the suspect allegedly wrote in one communication.
Investigators say a bolt-action rifle belonging to Robinson’s grandparent was used in the killing. The gun was later discovered in a adjacent field wrapped in a towel.
Three unspent rounds were recovered with the weapon, each marked with inflammatory messages.
Based on testimony from Robinson’s parent, the suspect had recently become increasingly ideological and begun leaning toward progressive views, embracing LGBTQ+ rights.
Robinson had also begun seeing his housemate, a man who was undergoing a gender transition, which reportedly caused tension within his family.
Robinson was arrested on September 12 and charged with aggravated murder. Prosecutors stated they will pursue the death penalty.
Law enforcement indicate Robinson’s own parent recognized him from news images of the suspect and notified authorities.
The suspect made an initial hearing on Tuesday, with a waiver hearing scheduled for September 29.
Prosecutors emphasized that the information presented are only allegations at this stage and recognized the pain of Kirk’s family.
“As with any homicide, the senseless ending of Charlie Kirk’s life has devastated the lives of those he loved,” said the prosecutor.
